Couples therapy is a supportive space for partners who feel stuck in repeating patterns, ongoing conflict, or emotional disconnection. We work with couples in person in Waimea on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, and virtually with couples located in Pennsylvania, Montana, and across Hawaiʻi.

Most couples aren’t struggling because of surface issues like chores or communication style. They’re caught in a cycle where one partner feels criticized, unseen, unheard, or not prioritized, or maybe the other feels overwhelmed, shut down, or like they can never get it right. Over time, this pattern creates resentment, loss of trust, and emotional distance, leaving both partners feeling like they have to walk on eggshells to avoid another argument.

Our approach to couples therapy focuses on identifying the core negative pattern, understanding the unmet needs and fears underneath it, and practicing new ways of relating that build emotional safety, reduce resentment, and restore trust and connection.

When “communication” hasn’t been enough

About embodied with aloha

its not just about the dishes

Keep having the same arguments that never fully resolve, even when you try to communicate differently

You don’t have to resonate with everything, our services may be for couples who:

Feel stuck in cycles where one partner feels criticized, unseen, or not prioritized, or maybe the other feels overwhelmed, shut down, or like they can never get it right

Find yourselves wondering whether past experiences or old relationship wounds are shaping how you’re reacting to each other in ways that don’t fully align with what’s happening now

Have a dynamic where fear of abandonment on one side meets fear of being smothered on the other, pulling you into opposite reactions

Take on each other’s emotions, so if one of you is upset about anything, the other becomes just as upset, anxious, or activated

Get caught in a push-pull between emotions feeling like too much and emotions being shut down or hard to access, leaving both of you unsure how to move toward each other

Ask yourselves together: Are our expectations blocking love? Would these same triggers show up with anyone? Or are we sabotaging love

Want to reduce resentment, rebuild trust, and feel more secure and connected without losing yourselves or walking on eggshells

What Couples Therapy Can Support

Sessions often focus on gently slowing down the negative pattern as it plays out between you, rather than talking about it from a distance. We pay attention to what happens in real time when one of you feels criticized, overwhelmed, shut down, or unprioritized, and get curious about what’s actually underneath.

As the pattern slows, we identify the unmet needs, fears, and protective responses driving it. This creates space for understanding that feels embodied rather than intellectual, and for moments where each of you can be heard differently.

You’ll also practice a new way of relating in session, including listening without interrupting, responding from vulnerability instead of defense, repairing after rupture, and reconnecting physically, such as holding hands or grounding together, when supportive. Our work is informed by Gottman Method, Imago Relationship Therapy, and Emotionally Focused Therapy, while staying focused on building real experiences of safety, trust, and connection that begin to replace the old cycle.

Sessions take place in person in Waimea (Kamuela) on the Big Island of Hawaʻii at 65-1231 Opelo Rd. Kamuela, HI 96743. We also offer sessions virtually for women and couples who are living in Hawaiʻi, Pennsylvania, or Montana.

Can you help me if I do not identify as a female?

Absolutely! You do not need to be or identify as female to work with us. Our speciality is in working with women, those who identify as female, trans women, non-binary folks and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

What is telehealth?

Sessions are offered virtually via teletherapy to women and couples in Pennsylvania, Montana, and Hawaii. We use a secure HIPAA platform (Zoom) to conduct these video sessions which you can access on your computer, tablet, or phone.

Do you take insurance?

We are in network with Mountain Health CO-OP (MT COOP) insurance and Aetna insurance for those in Pennsylvania and Montana. See questions regarding Out-Of-Network Insurances and Courtesy Billing for more information.

What are your rates and length of sessions?

Our rates are $175 per individual session and $200 per couples session. Session length may vary depending on the type of service provided and clinical considerations. We offer Courtesy Billing for those with Out-of-Network insurances. Many clients get up to 60-70% reimbursement of session cost. See questions regarding Out-Of-Network Insurances and Courtesy Billing for more information.

What are Out-of-Network benefits?

Out-of-network benefits mean that your insurance plan may still help cover the cost of therapy with us even if we are not directly contracted with your insurance company, depending on your specific plan.

Many of our clients receive approximately 60–70% of the session cost reimbursed through their out-of-network benefits, though reimbursement amounts vary by plan.

To make this easier, we offer Courtesy Billing, meaning we can submit claims on your behalf so you don’t have to navigate insurance reinbursement on your own.

How do I check my Out-of-Network benefits?

Insurance can feel confusing and overwhelming, especially if you’ve never used Out-Of-Network Benefits before. You’re not alone in this, and we’re happy to help.

Option 1: We can check for you
If you’d like support, we’re happy to check your out-of-network benefits on your behalf!
To do so, simply reach out to us at anna@embodiedwithanna.com as well as complete our contact form

Please include:
  • A clear photo of your insurance card (front and back)
  • Your date of birth
  • Your home address

If you are covered under a spouse or parent’s insurance, please also include:
  • Their full name
  • Their date of birth
  • Their home address

Once we have this information, we can help you better understand your Out-Of-Network benefits and potential reimbursement.

Please note: We are able to provide estimations only. While these estimates are typically very accurate, they are not a guarantee of reimbursement. Final reimbursement decisions are made by your insurance company.

Option 2: Check on your own
You can contact your insurance company directly by calling the member services number on the back of your insurance card or by logging into your online insurance portal.
When speaking with your insurance provider, you may want to ask:
  • What is my out-of-network deductible for outpatient mental health?
  • Is this deductible separate from my in-network deductible?
  • How much of my out-of-network deductible have I met this year?
  • What is my out-of-network coinsurance for outpatient mental health, or at what rate will I be reimbursed for out-of-network services?
  • Do I need a referral from an in-network provider to see an out-of-network therapist?

You can also ask how your plan reimburses for the following therapy billing codes:
  • 90837 – Individual therapy (approximately 60 minutes)
  • 90834 – Individual therapy (approximately 45 minutes)
  • 90847 – Couples or family therapy

Please note: Asking these questions and receiving benefit information does not guarantee reimbursement. Reimbursement amounts, eligibility, and timing are determined by your insurance plan.

What is Courtesy Billing and how does it work?

Courtesy billing is a service we offer to make using your out-of-network insurance benefits as simple as possible.
We use a platform called Thrizer to submit insurance claims on your behalf, so you don’t have to manage insurance paperwork or follow up with your insurance company.

When you use Thrizer:
  • You securely enter your credit card information for session payments
  • You also enter your bank account information so insurance reimbursements can be sent directly to you
  • If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, reimbursements are typically deposited directly into your bank account, often within a few weeks (timing varies by insurance plan)

Thrizer Pay Option:
Thrizer may offer an option called Thrizer Pay, which allows you to pay only your estimated responsibility at the time of the session instead of paying the full session fee upfront, and waiting for insurance reimbursement. Thrizer covers the estimated insurance portion directly and applies it to the session. A 5% processing fee applies if you choose this option.

Please note:
  • Courtesy billing and Thrizer services do not guarantee reimbursement
  • We are able to provide estimates only; while typically very accurate, final reimbursement amounts are determined by your insurance plan
  • Reimbursements are sent directly to you, not to the practice

If you have any questions about courtesy billing or Thrizer, we’re always happy to help walk you through it.

What is the cancellation policy?

We ask that clients cancel or reschedule at least 24-hours in advance. Each client is allowed one late cancellation or no-show without charge.

If a client misses more than one session without adequate notice, the full session fee will be charged to the card on file for the missed appointment. This policy is outlined in your informed consent documentation.

This is a strict policy so that we can mutually respect one another’s time and ensure availability for all clients. Exceptions may be made for medical or family emergencies at our sole discretion and is not guaranteed.
